How can Yoga help Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
“Yoga has been shown to reduce physiological arousal in PTSD patients and is believed to affect the pathology of PTSD by improving somatic regulation and body awareness, which are imperative to emotion regulation (van der Kolk et al., 2014)”. In my 8 Week PTSD Yoga Series (90 minute classes) where I blend in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (G-TEP) as well as some Art Therapy techniques to fully connect the mind and the body.
How can Yoga help bring couples closer together?
#1: In couples yoga you’ve carved out time for just the two of you. We need time with one another to nurture our relationship.
#2: Yoga is a playful activity where we can find our silly sides once again. Often times I find couples in my practice have gotten too lost in the day to day-work, politics, child rearing, finances, etc…just YuCk! All of those things are important and should be addressed, but first let’s remember to just live and laugh again! It’s easier to work on those things when our body feels regulated, and we are connected with one another.
#3: Increase your communication through words, eye contact, physical touch, and body language as you help one another find a deeper more pleasant stretch. We are here to increase our oxytocin (happy hormone) and decreasing our cortisol (stress hormone).
My AHIMSA Vow
Ahimsa is a term that comes from hinduism, buddhism, and jainism that means to do no harm to all living beings. As an anti-oppressive practitioner, I am fully aware of how white people profit off of the culture of another. That is why I vow to give back to the community that has blessed me with so much throughout my life. I commit to donating 5% to St Andrew Legal Clinic, 5% to Jesuit Refugee Services and 5% to Doctors Without Borders.
